Arriving imminently is the Garbaruk XC Crankset, first spotted on Dangerholm’s latest dream bike; the Scott Spark RC Hypersonic. If it was chosen by Gustav, it must be pretty light, right? Correct. Though machined from 7075 aluminum, the crankset’s weight is comparable to many carbon cranksets on the market, at a claimed 370-380g without the chainring. And, it’s absolutely stunning.

Poland-based drivetrain components manufacturer, Garbaruk, are due to release their very first crankset, aimed at the weight-conscious XC crowd. The hollow design of the two-piece crank arms goes a long way to delivering that low weight without compromising on stiffness. That, and the high level of customization available, Garbaruk say are the two highlights of this model.

At 370g-380g (model dependent) the Garbaruk XC Crankset is very impressive for a CNC machined aluminum offering. Semi-comparable is Actofive’s CNC machined hollow crankset, which weighs a claimed 475g without the chainring, though that one is rated for all-mountain riding too.

Dangerholm pairs his Garbaruk XC Crankset with a 40T chainring on the Scott Spark RC Hypersonic

Customers can choose from 8 colors of crank arm and 8 colors of lock ring, offering 64 possible color combinations – and that’s before you consider which chainring to buy, of which there are 8 colors to choose from.

The Garbaruk Crankset has a 30mm spindle and is compatible with Race Face bottom brackets and runs the Cannondale direct mount standard. Initially, it will be available in 170mm and 175mm crank arm length options only, though other length options are due to come. Also due in October 2022 is the Road/Gravel version.

The Garbaruk XC Crankset (without chainring) will retail at $420 USD (420€) and can be ordered from September 1st 2022 direct from Garbaruk.

$420 is a pretty good price for a fancy crank like this. Way better than the EEWings ticket.

Yeah, the pricing of that EEWings is nuts. I’ve seen one (1) out in the wild.

Come to Singapore, I saw a set on Brompton foldy just last weekend

i have a set and really like them, but yes the pricing is crazy. i only picked a set up when they ran a mystery box special years ago and they were half off. not sure i’d pay full retail on them.

lighter and cheaper than eewings, but are they more durable? time will tell. definitely tempted by these (and i own a set of eewings)

They’re not lighter than eeWings if you add the weight of the BB spindle you have to get. And there’s exactly zero chance alloy “XC only” cranks are more durable than titanium cranks…

A beautiful piece and Garbaruk makes quality stuff, but I wonder if the inside of the crank arm is smooth enough to run a power meter on it like a 4iii or a stages? If not that’s a bummer.

Neither of those is a real power meter anyway. Only right way to measure power is in the chain ring spider or at the pedal.

If you can compute power from strain gauges in the pedal spindles you can compute it from strain gauges on the crank arms.

That’s a nice looking crank. It’s a little confusing to say it’s “…compatible with Race Face bottom brackets…” because it actually needs a Race Face spindle. That’s another 85g and $80.

Are you saying this comes with no spindle at all?

Based on our lab testing, I’ll wager the eeWings out performs this crank significantly. Introduce rock strikes and impacts from MTB riding, and eeWings have no peer. Then consider the 10-year warranty on eeWings and it’s super stiffness-to-weight ratio, and there is nothing comparable. Admittedly, eeWings are expensive. But they do deliver. Lastly, we ship thousands of eeWings every year and still can’t meet demand — it’s a big world out there.

Looks good! Hopefully they’re durable as well as being light.

I see an opportunity for Garbaruk when they introduce the road version. Presently there aren’t really any other options that support Sram 2x Axs rings. Garbaruk apparently uses a Cannondale Direct Mount Interface….if they made a Sram AxS compaible spider I bet they could sell it both with the cranks and aftermarket.
