A Shropshire-based aluminium manufacturer slipped to a pre-tax loss during its latest financial year, new documents have confirmed, despite turnover surging by more than £100m.

Bridgnorth Aluminium, which makes coils for the printing industry, has posted a turnover of £277m for the year to 31 December 2021, up from £170.7m in 2020.

However, the company slipped to pre-tax losses of £4.7m, compared with profits of £124,000 in the prior period.

A statement signed off by the board said: "In 2021, the demand conditions for the aluminium flat rolled products industry recovered to pre-pandemic levels. The company also enjoyed good overall demand conditions, and also made further progress to change its product mix and start business with new customers.

"The company faced significant headwinds as a result of pressures on our workforce availability due to the pandemic. As a result, whilst volumes were ahead of 2019, they did not match the record volumes achieved in 2018.

"In terms of profitability, the company was impacted by significant inflationary pressures for energy, freight and packaging materials. Whilst the company tries to have a pass-through model, and in the case of energy the company introduced an energy surcharge to its customers effective 1 November 2021, there was nevertheless a lag between incurring the additional costs and transforming them into sales prices.

"This inflationary pressure was the source of the significant deterioration in profitability in 2021."

The business was established in 1933 as Star Aluminium, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alusuisse in Wolverhampton.
